Network File System (NFS) is going to be one of the important storage service in VMC and is already highly adopted storage service for on premise datastores.
Our team is delivering NFS service on cloud and on premise datacenters, driving core storage SaaS transformation, collaborating directly and routinely with various engineering service owners across teams, orgs, and business units . The opportunity for measurable and visible impact to the business and our service metrics is significant.
What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?
This role a software developer role in Network File System engineering development team. Candidate is responsible for development of new features, for maintaining current code and also supporting VMC Cloud service. You will participate in our on-call rotation and will maintain SLOs of the service by responding to incidents. You will also work on product bugs, features and support on premise customers. This role expects proficiency in programming skills mainly in C /C++, good understanding operating systems concepts and programming, proficiency in scripting. Awareness of software as a service model, cloud ecosystem and/or containers, Kubernetes, monitoring tools etc is desirable. You will work with various teams like system testing team, SRE team for cloud. You are expected to innovate and add value added services for monitoring, debugging and write automation scripts for daily jobs.
Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?
- Within first 30 days –
- Ramp up on NFS protocol and vSphere storage components.
- Ramp up on ESX ecosystem, development and build environment.
- Understand NFS service model on cloud.
- Within 90 days you will start supporting on premise and on-call rotation for VMC NFS.
- After 90 days –
- Contribute in on premise and VMC work in development of features , testing and bug fixing, servicing etc.
- You will participate in various meetings and collaborate within and other teams for feature development.
- You will do automation of service Runbooks, improve existing runbooks and automate standard workflows to reduce response time.
- Contribute in various initiatives across the BU.
- You must be adaptable, think fast on your feet, have good instincts based on prior experience, and be ambitious to take on more responsibility.
What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?
- This role will expect OS, C and kernel programming skills with scripting and automation for day to day operations.
- Resolve monitoring alerts and customer escalations as part of 12×7 on-call rotation.
- Design, develop and testing of new features.
- Resolve on premise customer issues and bugs.
- Review key performance indicators for opportunities to improve the service.
- Reduce human toil through automation.
- Reduce mean time to detect through monitoring improvements.
What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?
This position reports to the Manager of the core storage – NFS component, an experienced software engineer and manager who has many years of engineering and management experience. The team consists of highly competent engineers with nice blend and balance of seniority. We focus on iterative development, both of software and our software development practices.
You will initially be part an established team that has a wide range of core platform responsibilities, but the expectation is that you will help blaze a new trail for the team and organization.
